W.J. Francis 1963 157. California Quail July 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. Scattered. There were many loud assembly calls during the process, considerably more than earlier in the season, when more birds were occupied with nesting duties. At 0746 a pair with 3 downy chicks drank at the water hole. At 0748 a group of 4 F, 4 F, and 2 nearly full grown young F drank at water-hole. 0846 At Marion Spring blind. Many assembly calls heard all around. 0847 Two pairs of adults with a large group (c.20) 3/4 grown chicks, and another F nearby, got up the slope to the left. 0855 a F with 7 large chicks followed by a pair of adults crossed above the spring. Two large broods in sight on the hillside. A pair with 16 large chicks at water, an adult pair & a single F from the other side. 0858 Another brood with about 10 the same size - broods wiped somewhat and scattered. Pair with 14 large young on hill to left. Many birds all around - court
