California Quail
July 21. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1245. Found 5 eggs in the nest
in A-5.
July 21. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo
County. In the vicinity of Shandon
on the way to the ranch, noted 4
♀ quail perched on fence posts,
and one ♂ crossing the Road
with half-grown chicks. Observed
the falling of the water-hole in
part of the ranch house: 1940 adult
pair, followed by a group of 7 ♂♂
and 2 ♀♀. In the next half-
hour, over 40 birds assembled in
the clearing in front of the house,
brands a number out of sight in the
shelter. About 30 birds were in a
loose group, without very obvious
pairing, a number of pairs had
chicks from half grown to one
brood almost completely grown.
A smaller group of birds were
feeding in back of the house.
