California Quail.
July 20. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
E-10, no birds in the pen. 1300 Birds
in E-10 seem to be a pair with two
large chicks - obviously the Orange family.
1315. Heard two assembly calls -
often inside or close outside the pen.
1317 Green & perched on B-7 eucalyptus gave several series of
plits, one small chick was
noticed to fly to the base of
the eucalyptus. 1321 Six were
small chicks flew from weeds
in B-9 to the base of the B-7
eucalyptus - Green & still chipped,
giving clucks & soft "conver-
sational notes." 1326. A & at
the edge of weeds in D-9, Green still
on perch with chicks foraging
below. 1335 A & in B-9, walked
slowly into weeds. Green still on
perch, chicks not in sight.
1355 Green & flew to the ground
and led 8 chicks across
the pen to E-7. 1402 Orange
family to water-hole, all drank and
returned to cover at 1405. At
1408 I checked nest in A-5 and
found 4 eggs - laying is continuing.
