California Quail
July 19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
Particularly noticeable, while retrices are
my rudimentary, 1030. Orange
family feeding in A-2, close to the
observation hat. For the first time
I noted the two chicks giving the
typical "stretch" - extending a foot
backward and spreading the
wing on the same side. All wing
feathers appear to be fully developed,
with juvenal contact feathers over
most of the body, and the retrices
quite well developed but not yet
proportionally as long as in adults.

then walked to water hole. The
flight of the chicks is quite
similar to that of adults. 1040 Black
& preened extensively, with one chick
huddled close beside her as Orange &
perched in B-7 eucalyptus. 1045 Dis-

the fence in A-5, in the area
