W.J. Francois 1963. California Quail July 19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. Particularly noticeable, while retrices are my rudimentary, 1030. Orange family feeding in A-2, close to the observation hat. For the first time I noted the two chicks giving the typical "stretch" - extending a foot backward and spreading the wing on the same side. All wing feathers appear to be fully developed, with juvenal contact feathers over most of the body, and the retrices quite well developed but not yet proportionally as long as in adults. 1025 This family flew to about B-7, then walked to water hole. The flight of the chicks is quite similar to that of adults. 1040 Black & preened extensively, with one chick huddled close beside her as Orange & perched in B-7 eucalyptus. 1045 Dis- covered a nest with 3 eggs next to the fence in A-5, in the area where Black & spent a few minutes in the course of feeding in this vicinity. A fourth egg was on the ground about 4 feet away. This nest is just 12 feet away from Black's first nest. I al-
