W. J. Francis 1963 California Quail. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. Mar. 15. Six ♂ and one ♀ in trap, plus a pair in Bailey trap. Banded: Imm. ♂ - Dark Green. Imm. ♂ - #56601 Imm. ♂ - 56602 Ad. ♂ - Orange. Imm. ♂ - 56608 (Bailey trap). ♀ escaped from inaccurately closed Bailey trap. Ad. ♀ - Black. Ad. ♂ - 56603 (kept in pen) 1645 Released 4 birds in pen in Behavior Lab: Dark Green, Orange, Black, and 56603 Al. 'Birds flew against fencing once, then walked around edge - looking for opening. March 16. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 1400 Observed penned birds. Males 03 and ♀ Dark Green patrolling fence, later joined by another male in far corner. Pink ♀ near 03, but walked unsteadily into tall grass & hid. She remained motion- less when I approached until I could almost pick her up. Then ran away slowly & unevenly away - she may be sick or injured. Males observed eating leaves of vetch, soon they stopped & stood motionless, hunched up into round balls with feathers well-fluffed
