California Quail
July 17. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
1546. Orange family to water-hole, Black ?
and chickol drank, then followed ?
into clearing where all fed. As they
approached the instrument shelter, Orange
gave a single "squiril" note and ?3 ?
at once flew down from his perch on
the other side. 1548 Orange family
went into cover near D-4 eucalyptus as
Green ? and his chicks moved into E-1.
1550 ?3 ? ran across from E-6 to
C-9. 1553 Green ? and 8 chicks
ran down NE fence. 1556. Green ?
perched on weeds in E-6, and ? observed rapid pulsations of the throat with
bill parted, but heard no sound. One
of the small chicks ran rapidly into
the weed cover as he did this - this
performance was noted previously -
it appears to be either very low calls
or in an inaudible frequency range.
These pulsations, at a rate of about
4 per second, were repeated at
2 minute intervals until he left the
perch at 1602. At 1605 two were
assembly calls from outside; ? with
small chicks in C-10; at 1608 the
latter were in B-9 where the ?
perched in a small Baccharis.
