California Quail
July 17. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
but Orange ? not now in sight. 1458.
Several chicks with ? in E-10, the
size of Green family. Assembly calls
heard outside the pen. 1516 Green
? and ? (p.m. 9) chicks came out
from under E-4 eucalyptus, then
ran back when startled (by machinery
noises nearby ?) 1518 Orange and
Black ran across clearing to
water-hole and both drank; they
then moved slowly into B-4, feeding,
and Orange ? perched on top of
a tall weed. At 1525 the two
large chicks ? Orange moved into
this area from another direction -
"weaning" is apparently occurring
but incomplete as yet. The adults,
seen with binoculars at close range,
have no detectable signs of molting.
1634. ? with several small chicks in
D-7, Orange family still in B-4 with
? on same perch, others in the weeds,
feeding. 1538 ? with chicks crossed
from D-7 to E-9 eucalyptus, and
a pair seen along fence in E-10 -
1542. Two assembly calls heard from
antelope; ?3 ? perched on instrument
shelter; Orange ? on his same perch.
