California Quail.
July 17. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
all went into weeds in C-8, 0939 Green
♂ and chicks foraging in B-5, 0942
Green family (good count of 8 chicks)
drank at water hole and went under
B-7 eucalyptus. 0943 Another pair
(φ5-φ3?) drank at water hole and
flew quickly back to east corner.
With all birds accounted for, ended
obs. at 0945.
1355 Resumed observations in the
pen. Orange ♂ and Black ♀ in E-1,
the ♀ staying in weeds + grass along
the fence except for one short ex-
cursion into the pen, while the ♂
neared about much wire. 1400 φ3 ♂
came from C-8 to the water-hole, but
did not drink, then walked to in-
strument shelter & flew to the top,
where he perched 3 minutes, then
flew down and ran under B-7
eucalyptus - no ♀ seen with him.
1405 He then fed near water hole
and walked over + behind E-9 eu-
calyptus. 1435 A ♂ in guard position
in A-10; Orange and Black still
in E-1, but moving very little.
1442. Several chicks with ♂ in A-10;
another ♂ in E-10; Black ♀ still in E-1
