California Quail
July 16, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
gave a series of 3 assembly calls.
A large chick flew to the area
nearby and Black ♀ walked
forward him. He then flew to the
ground and the pair crossed the
center clearing, followed by the
two chicks, and went into the
weeds in E-4. 1610 Green ♂ with
8 chicks and Orange-Black pair with
2 chicks crossed in center clearing
with no interaction. Another pair
has been patrolling the SE fence
for some time - not identified -
and another ♂ noted in B-10 at 1615.
1635. ♂3-♂5 pair left B-5 and
fed in center clearing, then moved
to D-8 where ♀ disappeared in the
weeds. 1640. Black ♀ with 2 chicks
feeding while Orange ♂ perched on
instrument shelter. 1643. ♂3 ♂
walked over behind weeds in E-8, not
accompanied by ♂5 ♂ 1647. Orange-
Black and 2 chicks behind D-4
eucalyptus. Entered pen to search
area where ♂5 ♂ was last seen.
No signs of nest, but as I ap-
proached 2 ♂♂ gave a series
of "Pit" notes, then these two
