California Quail
July 16, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
pair flew to a perch on B-7 eucalyptus,
and identified as Orange. The ♀ with
him drank, but was not identified -
meanwhile Green family crossed by
the water hole and I got a good
count of 8 chicks, 1529 ♂3♂ and
♀5♀ came close to the ♀ with
Orange; she was identified as
Black. ♂3♂ chased her (Black)
for two minutes, then Orange ♂
flew to ground and a "battle"
ensued consisting of a number
of rushes and about 3 face to
face "cock-fight" encounters, ac-
companied by "quail" calls; Orange
eventually drove off ♂3♂. 1534
Orange and Black moved into B-3
feeding with 2 well-grown chicks
The remaining pair (Red ♂ and Yellow
♀ have not yet been seen). The
chicks of Orange have plumage well
grown, tail over an inch long,
and body contours beginning to
approximate the adult shape,
except for the head. 1540 Noted
a pair with chicks outside the
