July 16. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1500. As I entered the pen at the Be-
havior Lab, there was one ♂ in "guard"
position in B-9, and another ♂ in A-9.
1505 The B-9 ♂ preened and I saw
at least one chick nearby - then after
1 minute they went into weedy cover.
1510 (estimated time; watch stopped -
I set it ahead and rewound - sub-
sequent times today's notes subject
to correction). I sounded "assembly
Call" an artificial call. An an-
swer was given from very close,
then a ♂ flew to the fence in
area A-1 as a more distant assembly
Call was given. 1517 ♂3 ♂ gave
assembly call from water-hole then
flew to perch on top of instrument
shelter and repeated it - this is
probably same ♂ seen in A-1 just
before. 1520 ♂ with chickens in A-6
as ♂ ♂3 and ♀ 05 drank at the
water-hole. The former is green -
with undetermined number of chicks
scattered around; I counted only 5
but others were in the weeds. 1523
Another pair with two larger chicks
in B-8, moved behind the B-7
eucalyptus. 1527 The ♂ of this
