California Quail.
July 15. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
into D-8 weed patch together - there
appears to be a complete restuffling
of pairs following either loss or wearing
of young: 1050 The last noted
pair came to the water hole and
drank, then foraged together in
the center clearing; identified as
Orange & and Black &; her former
mate, Green & paid no attention,
even when the pair was within 10
feet of him. 1058, Another pair
feeding in B-5; Green & in B-4
commenced calling his chicks, and
the & from B-5 approached and
they scuffled briefly - on ground level
without jumping up in typical
cock-fight manner. 1100 Two pairs,
The Green family, and one & all
in sight at once, plus a &
walking on top of the pen over
the area where the brood is feeding.
1107 Two chicks appearing larger
than the Green brood, flew from
B-3 to B-7 and 8 - a distance further
than any of Green's chicks have
been seen to fly. These are probably
the fully weaned chicks of Orange
and OS. Ended obs. at 11/5.
