California Quail
July 15. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
the base of B-7 eucalyptus. All the
chicks then went into cover of weeds
while Green ♂ remained standing on
one foot on a small branch of eucalyptus
bent over to a horizontal position. 1019
Green ♂ extended the other (right)
foot, scratched his right side and
neck, and withdrew the foot into
belly feathers again; the entire leg
and foot are completely out of sight
in this stance. 1025 A pair,
unidentified, without any chicks,
came from weeds in E-6, crossed
the clear space in D-7, and ran
into the East corner. 1029 Green ♂
now standing on two feet; then flew
down to ground at 1030 and went
into cover in weeds with his chicks.
Thence across to instrument shelter
where he perched at 1035 as chicks
went into E-6 weed patch. 1038 One
pair near E-9 eucalyptus and another
pair in C-9. 1045: Both pairs and
Green ♂ with 7 chicks near water
hole, and a ♀, then later
another ♂ near E-9 eucalyptus.
One pair appears to be 03 ♂ and
05 ♂. The two from E-9 crossed
