W. J. Francis 1967 12. California Quail March 14. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. Adult Q - Blue. Two birds escaped when I failed to keep gunny sack tightly closed, one male escaped by knocking over net at exit tunnel. Remaining 3 birds released in bird pen in Behavior lab. All were able to fly and struck fence just once, then walked around edge of enclosure, + took cover in weeds. 1630 Read & emptied rain gage - 0.07 in. March 15. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 0825. Checked penned birds; F Red and Q Pink were sitting in grass a few inches high next to southeast fence; Q Blue later flushed from tall grass and weeds near east corner of pen. Q Blue flew into fence twice before joining the other pair. 1555 Red F and Blue Q walking around close together; Q ran around dish but, and F ran rapidly after her, and they disappeared in tall grass + weeds. Pink Q appeared in same corner after 3 minutes as I en- tered enclosure to scatter grain, then flew down hill & bounced off pen top, to the ground.
