California Quail.
July 6, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
near the top of the B-7 eucalyptus, and
bave a series of rapid chips. (This is
the 8 left with 3 chicks by his mate,
who was seen yesterday with φ3 8).
1620 Caught a glimpse of what
appeared to be a half-grown quail
feeding in 9-9, as Green 8 with
chicks appeared in B-4; Orange
8 still on same perch, but silent
for past few minutes. 1622 Orange
8 left perch into cover. 1625 Red
8 on the ground in D-4. Green
chicks continuing to forage, as much
as 12 feet from 8 in thick cover; no
sign of 9 with this brood as yet.
1628 Red 8 ran to E-4 behind Eucalyptus
as Green family moved toward water hole.
1634 Green 8 with chicks (more than
8, but no accurate count) went into
cover in B-9; the 8 is definitely not
with this brood.
