California Quail
July 4. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1105 a family (Green?) foraging
in the south corner. 1130. Family
crossed to water hole, drank, and
foraged in central clearing. Good
count of 11 chicks. At 1136 they
went into weed patch in C-8.
1140 One & chased another around
and in weed patch in D-8; a chick
was visible near them. 1200. Checked
area E-1 where & was seen yesterday. Flushed a pair along
NW fence - presumably #3 & and
Yellow &. No sign of nest.
July 5, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
At 1915 I saw a pair and another
did as I approached the pen, who
went into cover at once; an assembly
call heard shortly. Then nothing
until a squill call at 1929. Oct
1941 one & perched on tall weeds in A-9.
1945 Another & in A-10 as the first
ran up the fence. 1946. A pair in
A-10 and Red & in A-4 clearing.
1950 another & at edge clearing
in B-9, while are still visible in A-10.
1959. Red & came into B-9 from A-9,
feeding, then walked into B-10 weeds
