California Quail.
July 3. Strawberry Camp, Alameda County,
1508 In Behan's Lab pen. 1520
Green family in A-9, moving up to
the NW. 1527 Two accurate counts
of 11 chickens in this family. Red
♂ is visible along SW fence, moved
into A-2 at 1531. 1540 Green ♀
with 2 chicks came from E-8 along
weed patch to instrument shelter
while ♀ and other chicks stayed in
a behind weeds. 1545 a ♀ believed
to be ♂ walked up to weeds in E-1
without chicks or mate. 1552 With Green
♂ perched on instrument shelter, Black ♀
and chicks foraged across the central
clearing, and about 6 chicks drank
from the water hole. 1601 Heard a
series of 4 Squirrel calls; a ♂ along
fence in A-6, another in B-10; neither
was seen to give this call. 1604 Green
family in A-10, a ♂ on top of the pen
outside in same area. 1635 Orange
♂ with chicks in C-8; Green still
foraging over the pen with family
(max count still 11) and a ♀
in E-1. I could see a small limit
quite definite plume on one of the
large Orange chicks. 1650. Green
family all drank at water hole.
