California Quail
July 2. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County
0854. A series of Cav. calls outside the
Behavior Lab pen, and another 3
walking on top of the pen in B-7.
0900 Green family left D-7 weed patch
to forage in central clearing; another
3 perched on tall grass in the
center of this weed patch, then to water
hole where all drank. No good count,
but apparently all 13 chicks present.
0911 with Green 3 and family in B-6, a
3 was perched in tall weeds in A-9 and
another on ground at edge of weeds in
D-8. 0913 a 3 also in D-8; a 3 in
E-9. 0916 a couple of fairly large chicks
in D-8. 0933 Lattler family came into
central clearing, consisted of Orange 3,
5 3, and 3 chicks, one smaller
than the others, the two larger seem
about large enough for short flights.
Green family in C-8 at the same time.
Orange chicks went to water hole
and drank, 3 on top of the pen
above the Orange family. Two
other 3s in sight in A-9 and E-9.
No sign of Yellow 3 as observations
terminated at 0941.
