1963.
California Quail.
July 1. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0944 Green family came from the NE
into C-3. 1000 Green family into B-4,
under weedy cover. [See Journal p.78
for entries to 1056] Searched
area where last pair seen 1100 to
1120. Flushed a bird (unseen) in
thick weeds in A-9, but careful
search revealed no nest. Body
of a small chick was found
here, however; well dried out,
probably a victim of exposure from
frost (Orange) brood. 1145 a
pair with 2a3 chicks at edge of
clearing in B-9. 1202 As an assembly
call was heard outside the pen, a quail
flew from the cart to the south
corner. 1210 Green family from C-9
to water hole, to B-6. At 1225
foraging in C-1 and C-2. Frequently
the 9 ward apparently scratched up
a choice food supply, and 3a4
chicks would feed right by her
back. Verified certain count of 13
as they crossed clearing by the
instrument shelter. Ended observation at 1232.
