1963.
California Quail.
Vore 28. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
Chicks are rather widely scattered in
this general area, not particularly
close to either parent. 1623. Whole
family to water, then moved 1/2
into B-7; est. count still 11.
1632 Male p3 flees to top of large
shelter, then back into cover after
1½ minutes. Green family now
in A-9,10. 1652. Outside P on
top walked to A8 and gave 3
assembly calls - did he see the 6½
lost chicks? 1659 a P flees from
B-7 into Eucalyptus shrub in B-6.
1701 Green family in A-5; outside
P gave several assembly and squall
calls. Fairly good count of 12 chicks.
1704 Another P running along fence in
A-7, and ♀ (05) with chicks in C-7
1706 Recounted 12 chicks certain in Green
family. 1710 Checked outside pen by
A-7 for chicks - negative. 1720 The
P in A-7 moved to A-6 and made
very excited notes like shatter plots -
warning notes for chicks - but again
looked outside and could find no
sign of chicks. Cow! calls heard
outside at 1724, and assembly
calls, as I ended obs. period.
