W.N. Francis 1963 California Quail March 9, 1963. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo. Clearing, and a hen the other side of the fence in coral area, enclosed by wire mesh at bottom, were apparently paired, the hen looking for a way through the fence, and the cock, after running about randomly, flying up to the top of a basketball standard. Three other pairs observed coming down from stubble hillside, then several separated birds, gradually aggregating into a compact group. March 12. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 1630. Checked trap near Belavin Lab.; contained one Brown Towhee and a pair of quail which escaped from Bailey trap as I was stunning them for banding. March 13. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 0835. Checked trap - no quail, grain not eaten around trap. 1545. March 14. 4 ♀♀, 2 males in trap. Banded imm. ♀ Pink imm. ♂ Red. imm. ♀ Light Green. imm. ♀ Yellow
