W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail June 28. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 1103. A good count of 17 chickens in Green family crossing a clearing in E-2. This does not account for smaller chicks seen with Orange family.'?. 1110 Green family came from weed patch into D-6 as another pair with chicks were sighted briefly in E-7. Green family then crossed to water hole where 9 drank at 1117, then moved down toward fence through C-9. 1121. A short chase in E-10, followed by several squall calls - 1135 a pair foraging in C-9, a "hard" variation of assembly call heard outside. 1143. Pair emerged from weeds in D-7 with 2 large and 1 small chicks, came to water hole at 1147 and chicks drank. The 2 large chicks have tufts of down in the tail region, the smaller quite tail-less. At 1149 they went into cover in C-8 near eucalyptus shrub. 1155 Saw Green family in A-1; as they moved down the fence, I saw a number of small chicks outside the fence & Blacks & very mellowing low soft assembly calls.
