California Quail.
June 28. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1017. Noted a F in A-7 as Green
family emerged from E-8; F pecked
at instrument shelter as 4 and clucked
frayed along edge of weed patch.
1025. Family returned by same route,
as another F visible in D-9, within 4.
Pen is now in complete sunshine
except south & east edges and
local shade of vegetation is nil.
1034. Chicks visible with pair in D-8,
larger than Green family. 1040
Green family coming into D-8 as the
previous pair emerged from weeds
into C-8, then to water-hole again;
I counted (uncertainly) 17 chicks,
then they moved in weeds in B-6.
1047. A pair with several(!) chicks
just below the water hole. Then 905
Came to water hole with one chick, with
remiges sprouting & twice the size of
the younger chicks; Orange F stood
at edge of water while one other
chick drank, then at 1053 the
family returned to weeds with one
smaller chick strayed from the
Green brood(?). Since previous glimpses
appeared to be 4 or 5 chicks, this
family may be somewhat scattered.
