California Quail.
June 28. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
outside the hut to look at the
family quail. The chicks were on
the bank very close and at once
hid under vegetation and froze
while the parents ran about.
Close by making alarm notes,
and the I made a display
intended to distract me -
he half-squatted, partly extended
his wings and made several short
snubs, at the same time giving
a call note I had not heard
before - somewhat like "Plif" of
alarm, but louder and of
a different quality. After I
returned to the hut, at 8:48
I heard assembly calls just
outside and then saw the
family group heading downhill
along the SW fence outside.
These chicks were a size comparable
to the Orange family when
last seen 3 days ago. NOTE All
quail went into cover after this
commotion until 10:2 when I
saw a fly to top of the pen
(quail) in E-10, and noted
another outside the fence in E-10.
