California Quail.
June 28, Strawberry Camps, Olameda County.
Counted 14 chicks, with possibly some mixed in weeds 2-3 inches tall. Green
F gave squill call as Red F came
Close, then the latter went to water hole,
Thence to cover in weeds. 0905 Family
of eight in weeds, working down
Towards south corner. 0910 Two
guardian males visible in A-7 and A-8.
0915 Pair with chicks in B-5. These
moved into central clearing - seem to
be the same (Green) family. 0926
Counted 16 (perhaps 17) as they passed
water hole without drinking, and went
into weedy cover. 0935 Red F, after
standing erect as in guardian pose for
several minutes in A-5, fed in clearing
in A-4, then at 0938 returned to A-1,
where a pair with an estimated 8
chicks, about a week old, were
foraging outside the fence. The
outside male twice gave squill
calls and once rushed at Red F
across the fence; meanwhile another
single F on top of the cage flew
down near this family. 0940 The
Green family went to the water hole
where the adults and some of the
young drank. 0942 I stepped
