W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail June 28. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 0725. Heard Cw! call near Behavior Lect. In the pen at 0730 Red 8 in A-1 was running back & forth along gate, and gave cerial assembly & cw! calls. Another bird calling from very close outside the pen. I flushed Red in order to see him in flight: tail feathers had a definitely ragged appearance, but I was unable to determine with assurance whether molt had begun. 0810 with outside Cw! calls continuing regularly, Red 8 walked up toward the west corner again, and another bird outside joined in the calling, al- terating with the first. 0827 Another 8 ran into cover in E-8, Red still in A-1. 0831 A pair briefly noted in B-8. 0840 Red 8 walked down toward south corner - outside calls continuing, less frequent & regular - and returned at 0844. 0845 Pair with many small chicks in B-7. Nearly half the pen is now in full sunshine, the remainder about 2/3 shaded by eucalyptus trees to the east. 0852 Green 8 perched on weeds in B-6 while chicks foraging nearby with 8. 0900 As Green- family moved into clearing in A-4, I
