W.N. Francis 1963 124, California Quail June 25. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 1702. Orange F and O5F with only 3 downy chicks foraging in D-7 for 2 minutes, then returned to weed patch. These chicks do not appear noticeably larger than when seen almost a week ago. 1706. O3F came from E-S toward the center, then saw back; the fact that his mate was not with him suggests she may be incubating. June 26. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 0920 Heard a Cow! call near Pice Grove where approaching Belvain lab. 0925 in the Belvain Lab for the Red F walking around in the west corner; a pair in thick weeds near south corner. At least 7 House Finches have found a way into the pen and are having trouble getting out, also some juncos inside. 0931 One quail chased another in west corner; Red F in in B-4. 0941. A pair with a large number of small young in A-5 to B-5 staying in weedy cover. 0955 Green family near fence in A-5. I entered the pen to try to locate other birds or nests. Found this family in & along fence - that & did not
