Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 0855 Checked nest A-3 in Behaviort Lab. pen, & was brooding chicks while had recently hatched - several heads were visible as they moved about and stretched necks out from beneath the hen's feathers. Did not disturb them. 1525. Heard two birds giving calls call near Pine Grove picnic area when I passed. 1530 Checked nest A-3 in Behaviort pen - 17 empty shells and one unhatched egg, which differed in appearance from the others in having a light brownish instead of white ground color. 1555. A & walking on top of the pen (outside) in A-9, near probable position of the new brood, as a & inside ran from there up to A-5. 1558 Heard a squirrel call, then two assembly calls from outside to the NW, 1630 A & in A-4 in the "guardian" posture, occ. feeding. 1632 Pair Orange- 05 came around west paths in D-7, with 2 a-b chicks visible but went back in woods. 1633. Pair with many newly hatched young in D-5 moving across toward the center of the pens. 1639 Orange family in C-8, still staying out of open areas.
