California Quail.
June 23. Hastings Reservation, Marterey County.
1746 Saw (another?) adult pair
further up pump road as I was
leaving the area.
June 24. Hastings Reservation, Marterey County.
0805 a ? crowing from fence post
near fork in the road in the area, at
about 11 sec. intervals, except occasionally
a double crow - 1 or 2 sec. interval.
0945 I walked dirt entrance road
looking for tracks in the dust or other
signs of quail broods; negative results
until at 1030, at the ford nearest
the entrance gate, a ? flew up
briefly from the adjacent grassy
meadow, then dropped back into the
grass and gave a series of "plit"
notes. I retreated to an inconspicuous position and watched
till 1045, then approached for a
closer look - no evidence of quail.
1113 A ? flew from grassy slope in back
of garages at Davis house, up into large
live oak. The distribution - or lack
of it - noted suggests that most
of the birds (except one or two
unmated males) are incubating.
