W.J. Francis 1963 10. California Quail. March 9. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County. 0615 awakened by quail calls and observed covey feeding as a group in front of house. 0638 Saw two pairs, prefeeding in front of house, one pair near water pool; the hen of the latter pair was standing about 2 feet from the pool, while the cock was standing on the rocks at the pool edge. As they walked toward the hen slowly, and with no preliminaries stepped on her back and attempted copulation. The hen did not squat or make other response and he stepped off in a few seconds, and both wandered into the brush. 0645. Eight birds feeding separated into 4 distinct pairs. One pair retreated into brush, a second to the far to side of the feeding area, and the other two pairs remained close together, then drifted apart by couples. A few other birds joined or left these pairs, with two instances of one cock briefly threatening another; main body of covey was not in this area. 0700 In rear of house observed 4 separated pairs feeding; a cock in same
