California Quail
June 23. Gillis Canyon, San Luis Obispo Co.
At Dveris Windmill, leaving McMillen
Sawb. 7 ready grown young and
3 old birds flew into the brush,
one young & poor flier, at 1121.
June 23. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County.
At 1632 saw an adult pair in the
road near the fork. They gave
several "plit" calls, ran back into
the grass, then came into the road
again and walked as a couple
crossed the road (it apparently
went into a burrow, since I
could not locate it immediately
afterward). The quail then
ran down the pump house road.
I parked down this road about
100 feet from the pump. At 1652 an
adult pair came running down the
road; paid little attention to the car
parked with the front almost on the
road, only reaching a little faster
on the further wheel track; and
went directly to the pump, where
the seepage water is not visible
from this point. 1527. Adult
pair ran backs up the road and
into cover after passing the car.
