California Quail
June 23. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County.
Bluid, several birds flying part of the
way, quite competently. There seemed
to be another family group discernible
through the grass near them. 0819
An adult pair and a J at the
water trough. 0820 a pair with
eleven half-grown young came to
water area; the first were chased
off by the J of the pair there, and
after a little milling around they
retreated up the hill; one young
bird made a rather long flight
and circled back up to the top
of the ridge. 0824 Pair with 16
young came to water, the other
group visible on the ridge at
the same time; and a group
of about 10 adults up the hill,
with one small chick, which was
chased by one of the adults. Much
interaction as birds mixed, with groups
running into cover, flying a short
distance in some cases. Then a
turning to water. 0824. A single
half-grown chick came from the left,
apparently lost, and joined the others;
then both large groups moved off
down canyon, and I left the blind.
