California Quail
June 23. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County.
Keep the count straight. I believe
three were pairs and two were
males have joined the group. There
is considerable noise, assembly calls,
cluckings, squall calls accompanying
chases or without chase. 0757 Saw
crippled S, probably same one noted
yesterday. There are at least six
pairs present and 6-8 single S's,
no young birds. 0801 A better
look at Crippled S - angle of broken
leg and style of hopping exactly
like that seen yesterday. At 0805
got a good count of 22 birds as
they moved N, 16 in one group
and others separately. I pur-
posely startled the group to note
their flight - what only saw,
did not see any sign of molt in
those that did fly. A brood of
4-6 nearly grown young not
previously seen also flew N up
the hill. These birds behaved
demost as in a covey, except for
the aggressin frequent between
males. 0815 A brood of 16 half
grown young with a pair of adults
