W.J.Francis 1963. California Quail June 23. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County. Keep the count straight. I believe three were pairs and two were males have joined the group. There is considerable noise, assembly calls, cluckings, squall calls accompanying chases or without chase. 0757 Saw crippled S, probably same one noted yesterday. There are at least six pairs present and 6-8 single S's, no young birds. 0801 A better look at Crippled S - angle of broken leg and style of hopping exactly like that seen yesterday. At 0805 got a good count of 22 birds as they moved N, 16 in one group and others separately. I pur- posely startled the group to note their flight - what only saw, did not see any sign of molt in those that did fly. A brood of 4-6 nearly grown young not previously seen also flew N up the hill. These birds behaved demost as in a covey, except for the aggressin frequent between males. 0815 A brood of 16 half grown young with a pair of adults Crossed along ridge Snyrite He
