June 23. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County.
0708 Heard a series of "plit" calls nearby
and saw one 8" drinking at seepage
pool up canyon, while another walked
down to drink below the water trough.
0716 A pair with 3 small chides, just
past the dormy stage. 0720 Two nine
males up the canyon, we gave three
"smoky" assembly calls, a & joined
the other, drinking at the seepage
up the canyon. The first of these
two 8" got water by hopping into a
board floating in the water trough, since
level is too low to reach from the
edge of the trough except in one corner.
The same 8" remained near the water
trough foraging, apparently for grit
particles; he stayed on bare trampled
ground & did not seem to pick any-
things from cattle droppings.
0747 Three pairs of adults on
canyon bottom, another pair followed
by a single 8" down hill.
0751 Four 8" plus a pair approached
from opposite ridge to the left; the
mated 8" chased another, with
squill calls. 0755". Birds are
moving in and out, in pairs and
single 8", so that I cannot
