W. J. Francis 1963. California Quail . June 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. more lived around to the front of the house to roost there. Perhaps 100 birds are roosting there all told. One pair, which went to front of the house, had a brood of 12 young nearly full grown; and a pair which went into the artificial roost had 4 young but half grown, but good fliers. A full-fledged scuffle occurred with two birds con- fighting each other, and keeping up at each other; however no blows were struck and it ended with a short chase, after which the loser retreated. June 23. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. This morning I heard quail calls at 0512, from the roost tree near which I was camped, and saw numerous pairs along the road on the way to Marin Spring, where I settled in the bluff at 0700. A few assembly calls were heard in the distance, but this is apparently ahead of time for morning visits to water.
