California Quail.
June 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
1744. Driving up the road from the
ranch house I flushed a large
flock of young that appeared no
more than half grown, yet were
able to fly across the canyon,
no count was possible, but
there were at least 20, I could
not tell if there was more than
one pair of adults. 1749. Two
pairs of adults with about 20
half-grown young were in the
turn of the road at the old
gravelery, ran to the base of
the windmill. 1751. In the
quail enclosure here, a pair on the
fence post and one on the ground
flew into nearest shrubbery,
followed by 6 half-grown young.
1757 On the road across the
ridge near camp, flushed a
pair with about 4 well-grown
young, good fliers, and
another adult pair.
2000 to 2045 I watched quail
going to roost in back of
ranch house. I saw 50 going
to roost in the artificial roost
here, but saw as many a
