California Quail.
June 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
The latter were in juvenile plumage
with no trace of down except on the
head. The two groups united
together, the ? with smaller chicks
was seen to peck at her own
(disciplinary?) and the larger
group moved up hill as the small
chicks went to water. 1027 a
pair with 10 downy chicks,
also only a few days old, and an
adult pair foraging near the water
trough. 1031. Another adult pair.
1036 Adult pair - possibly the same
as the last 1043. Another adult pair
from up-canyon. 1105. A single ?
crossed hillside above the water trough.
Decrease in activity, including calls,
The last half-hour indicates
main watering period in past, so
ended observation.
1544. Checking birds coming to
water-hole at the ranch home.
1545 a pair with one chick, less than
half-grown, crossed the clearing.
1555. Adult pair; ? drank first, ? after
she had finished. 1607 Adult 'pair,
same procedure, ? in "guardian"
