California Quail
June 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
a pair with three quite small chicks
(8-10 days?) from the right. Many
of the previous group (6 88 and
2 98 closely grouped) moved off,
but some came back, making it
difficult to detect new individuals,
if any arrived. 0955. The three
chicks were chased by the 4 of a
pair which they encountered when
leaving water; parents did not
show aggression but left with the
chicks in another direction. These
chicks are short of a juvenile
plumage, but little brow is
visible; length is less than 1/3
that of the adult. 0958 An
adult pair came directly to water
from up-canyon to the left, most
probably another pair from the
previous group. Still misassembly
Cells, some quail calls. 1001
Another adult pair from the hill-
side across canyon to the right.
1007. A pair with eleven downy chicks
only a few days old came down hill
from the left as two pairs with
combined broods of about 21 came
to water along canyon floor from left.
