W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail June 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. very nearly the same size. 0855. A ♀ chased a young bird; a similar chase at 0858 as a large group ♀ adults and young came to the water. Three left in about a minute in two groups - an adult pair with 13 chicks, another pair with about 8 - all the same size as the previous group - may be the same. 0900 An adult pair without young at water. 0904 A single ♀. 0913 A single ♀. 0935 An adult pair, followed shortly by a single ♀, neither took notice of the other. Assembly calls are continuing fairly close for the last 5 or 10 minutes, and a series of squill calls heard at 0939. At 0940 an adult pair. 0943 Group of two pairs plus two single ♀s; one of the later chased the other, who then stayed back away from water, then came in from another direction at 0945, followed by two more ♀s, are crippled with right leg hanging completely useless, the bird hopping on one leg only. 0946.
