W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail March 8. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. in front of the house. 0620 Ob- served a group of about 30 in clearing around windmill, about half staying in pairs (4 pairs well separated from others.) 0625 Single pair feeding in front of house. Four pairs in pasture west of house, all well separated, ran into brushy enclosure around house. Two large groups flew from brush piles in this pasture as a Marsh Hawk of two ravens flew on lower end. A group of 14 birds remained near one brush pile on ground, including 2 pairs very little separated, all 14 flew towards brush enclosure in a group as I approached. 1000 On passing row of Atriplex in the "Willows" area observed a covey feeding near the edge. One bird made a typical Chase of another. Later observed a solitary pair along wadside near ranch house. 0645. Eight birds feeding in same area separated into 4 distinct pairs - one pair moving into brush, a second moving to
