W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail June 21. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. in the fields near the ranch house, apparently heading for the artificial nest there. On the way to camp saw a covey of 15-18 birds near the camp bottom where the back road joins Cilli Canyon Road. These were apparently all adults. June 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County. 0820 I disturbed a number of birds as I approached the blind at Marin Spring - from a distance I would estimate a brood of 8-10 newly grown young and about 2 other groups of adults. 0845 A brood of 6 half-grown chicks accompanied by 4 adults came to water, and in about 2 minutes were joined by 8 more young about the same size - the 14 probably are the combined broods of the two pairs. At 0850 another brood of 9 young arrived followed after a short interval by a pair of adults; the 2 chased one of the young of the first group. The groups intermingled so it was difficult to distinguish broods, all moving
