California Quail
June 21, McMillan Ranch, Sanhuis Obispo Co.
weeds just above the trough, then saw
them up the hill at 1551 as a
herd of cattle came to drink at
the water trough. An occasional
assembly call was heard while cattle
milled around the area & finally
partially scattered, about half
remaining near water trough. At 1747
a single F flew to fence post on
ridge above spring and gave several
assembly calls. A pair was seen to
cross over with several chicks near
fence. They worked down the hill
across the fence and constituted
the following: [illegible] two & and
one F, followed by seven half-
grown chicks, and another F
bringing up the rear. They did
not come to water, but retreated
up the hill when startled, the
two F's changing places at ran-
dom as the group milled around.
Some quail calls were also heard
at this time. In addition to this
double brood, at 1810 there were two
pairs without young and a single
male on the ridge across the fence.
On further inspection, these chicks
