June 21. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
1452. In the blind at Marin Spring.
1517. Heard a series of low assembly
Calls on opposite hillside. 1533 I
saw a F just below the fence across
the canyon, who then retreated
into the weeds and I heard a
series of low "conventional" notes.
1535- A pair without young came
down hill across the fence,
and into the area of the single
F. After they met there were
several squill calls and other
throaty clucking notes, then
the single male left the weeds
and sat in the dust near the
water. At 1537 another pair
without young came down the
same trail as the first, then
crossed the fence and continued
down to the water, where they
foraged along the water's edge,
scratching in the dust and then
drinking; at 1544 walked back up
the hill slowly. At 1547 a pair
with a single chick, larger
than the brood seen earlier but
still mud. less than half-grain
