California Quail.
June 21. McMillan Ranch San Luis Obispo Co.
to water at once, but the chicks
ran first to adjacent weedy cover.
Then came out to water. 12/13 Two
88 and a pair without young came
to water. 12/15 Two more pairs with
no young and a single 8 came
directly down hill, as the family
left up the slope down canyon.
12/19 Counted 4 single 88 and 2
pairs near the water. Some squill
calls, a beginning of a fight, and
a very short chase were observed.
12/21 A pair (without young) came
down hill to water - this may have
been a previously observed pair
that had been driven off a few
minutes ago. 12/25 Most of these
birds moved off as a group,
feeding below the water trough,
but with nervous squill calls as
they came close. 12/30 Another
pair without young - this makes at
least 5 pairs without chickens to
one pair with a brood of 11 - a
ratio insufficient to maintain a
1:1 ratio of young to old. Left
the blind at 12:37.
