W.S. Francis 1963. California Quail. June 20. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. calls were heard. June 21. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. First heard quail calls near camp at 0550. These continued intermittently as long as I was in camp, mostly assembly, some Cw!, and occasional Sguill calls. Noted several pairs and individual SP on the road to the ranch house. At 1000 a pair with a large band of very small young, about 15-18 crossed the clearing at the ranch house. Other small young seen in back of the house. Marion Spring blinds: 1148 a pair without young came to water, I gave several assembly calls. 1158 a pair with several small young were on the hillside above the seepage pool up the canyon from the water. through, and another P on the first small ridge. Assembly and Sguill calls from both. 1203 The family group moved across the slope and down to ground water pools just below the trough. I counted 11 chicks, only a few days old. The adults went
