W.V. Francis 1963. California Quail June 19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. with a "husky" assembly, verging on the squill call quality; but re- treated when Orange approached. 1530 A third bird, either inside or outside, appears to be in this vocal duel, Red 8 having re- treated down the NE fence. 1535 I entered the pen for an instrument check and Orange 8 responded with a long series of "plit" note, retreating slowly as I came closer, then other males, including are outside the pen, gave several minutes of assembly, squill, and plit calls. June 20. Gillis Canyon, San Luis Obispo County. 1750 At Drew's Windmill, where half grown young were seen last month, I saw 4 8 8 and 1 9 on the pasture just outside the enclosure. Another 9 was perched on top of a shrub and giving the assembly call. Several pairs and single 8 8 were seen along the road in driving up to McMillan's, and a few "Caw!"
