California Quail.
June 19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1435. The lone ♂ outside has remained
on top of the pen, and is now over
A-10, perhaps following the brood of
chicks. 1442. He walked over B-10,
then flew to ground next to fence.
1457. Orange-05 pair moved up
from E-3 to weeds in E-1. I saw only
4 chicks with them, but others may
have preceded them before the adults
ccaught my eye. The ♂♂ ♂ moved
along fence into D-1 as the family
came into his corner. 1501 One ♂
chased another from D-1, down
to center of pen, then both
took flight and chase continued in the air back to the
north corner. Orange ♂ was not
involved - probably ♂♂ chasing Red.
1515 ♂♀ with 5 chicks crossing the
clearing while Orange ♂ gave assembly
calls + saw squall calls in D-1;
both Red and ♂♂ ♂♀ are in the
vicinity. 1520 Orange ♂ still
calling as ♂ and chicks went
by water hole to B-5; a chick
brinking seemed to be a sixth
which had become separated.
