California Quail
March 7. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo
County.
from window of unlighted room. Counted
19 apparent pairs and 42 unpaired
birds/pairs coming into roosting area. With
large numbers & deepening dusk was
unable to distinguish pairs, counted
a total of 182 birds going to roost
between 1820 and 1830. At least
several pair bonds seem to be formed
in about 1/2 the birds.
March 8. Awakened a little before 6 a.m.
by quail noises in roost just outside
outside of my bedroom window, and
looked out to see quail leaving
roost - mostly in straight and
nearly level flights. Some quail
feeding on ground near the roost,
the majority on baited area in
front of the house, Almost con-
tinual calling by several birds.
Apparently all birds out of the roost
by 6:10. I opened a noisy door
at 6:15 and stepped out, with
an immediate clamor coming
from dogs in two pens, and
all quail scattered rapidly
including those out of sight
