California Quail
June 18. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
turbed the incubating F. 1515 Uniden-
tified adult pair feeding near water pod,
can down to C-9 at 1518; then single
F (different) crossed from D-8 to C-7;
the other F just visible in C-9. 1521
Red F in North corner. At 1523 F
in C-8 crossed to North corner, and
clearly identified as Red - previous
bird was either mis-identified (and
have been Orange) or flew back un-
observed. 1524 Saw adult pair near
water hole again, then they crossed
B-9 and into weeds; evidently
now returning to the nest in A-3.
1530 Pair visible in B-8; heard a
single Cow' call - apparently outside
the pen. 1533 Green-Black pair
flew from B-8 to within 3 feet
of nest in A-3, and 4 at once
can to the nest; this ended an
inattentive period of 31 minutes.
No further activity up to 1610 when
two birds were heard crowing outside
the pen - one very close. At 1626
a F visible in weeds in C-9; at 1630 he
walked toward water hole, feeding.
