W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail June 17. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. tapering off in number & intensity. 0942. Saw a pair briefly in D-8, who then went into weed patch there, several chicks followed. The family gradually worked up along the edge of thick weeds, chicks & 2 feeding steadily, 1 spending some time looking about. 0948 Another 1 feeding in E-8. 0950 Family group out of sight in weeds. 0953. 1 E-8 moved to D-6, seen to be Red. Pair with Chicks crossed C-8, below water hole, a lone male on top of the pen just above the family. Enclosed. at 0957. 1910. Lone 1 outside sitting on the pen over area A-1. A bird (guarding ?, Green?) flew from this area as I approached. Incubating 1 on the nest in A-3. 1932. Red 1 in clearing, soon ran to cover in North corner. Squill calls heard & weeds seen moving in D-5. 1938 Orange 1 feeding in E-3; if he is not the father of the just hatched brood, as his being alone indicates, then by elimination this brood is from 03 1 and Yellow ?.
